Originally built in 1909 as a state-of-the-art tuberculosis hospital, the Brestovac Sanatorium was designed to offer patients a relaxing place to recuperate surrounded by nature and the clean air of the mountains. It was later used as a military hospital during both World Wars before being abandoned in 1968.
The site can be accessed by taking tramlines 8 or 14 from Zagreb city centre and changing to the 140 bus at Mihaljevac. From the Šumarske jaslice bus stop its a 20-minute walk uphill. It is also possible to take the cable car up from the outskirts of the city and get off at the middle station, Brestovac. The mine was closed in the mid-17th century after very little silver had actually been found. To visit the mine you need to go with a guide. You can either take the bus up to the stop for the mountain lodge Grafičar or drive up from Zagreb and park at the mountain lodge.
